History, up to MTMTE #34

After the Lost Light returned from the land of quantum bafflement, Brainstorm knocked out everyone in Swerve's bar and time-traveled to the past, intending to kill Megatron, prevent the civil war and save many lives. Rewind and Chromedome were among the first to realise that something was amiss, as Brainstorm's actions began rewriting the timeline and with it, Rewind's archival memories. Rewind was faced with an intimately detailed knowledge of a Cybertron where the Functionalists had prevailed and grown in strength — a world where Cybertronians were regularly culled as their alt-modes were deemed "obsolete" and dissidents had their heads replaced with flatscreens. In this timeline, encroaching upon the main one, Dominus Ambus had never disappeared and Rewind had never met Chromedome &mdash but Dominus Ambus had become a flathead, losing his head and his voice. Yet he and Rewind continued fighting against the Functionalist government in secret.

Meanwhile, in the still-surviving original timeline, Chromedome and Rewind were having marital troubles. Rewind had moved out of their shared quarters, not quite able to adjust to the fact that Chromedome was not his Chromedome and was also expecting him to slot back into his life like his Rewind had never died. Finding the implications of the whole affair unsettling, Rewind distanced himself emotionally and physically, much to Chromedome's dismay.

In an effort to stop Brainstorm destroying the timeline and replacing it with a worse one, a team of Autobots, including Rewind and Chromedome, set out to chase him down and bring him back before he could do any more damage. They followed Brainstorm through significant moments in Megatron's rise to power; he always failed to kill Megatron but the Autobot team equally failed to stay unobtrusive, getting involved in the goings-on around them.

Eventually, they confronted Brainstorm in the facility where Megatron's body was Constructed Cold (that's when Cybertronians make Sparks artificially and construct bodies for them, rather than having sentio metallico grow naturally around a naturally-spawned Spark). Brainstorm failed to shoot Megatron's Spark, but Rewind, suddenly incensed, shot him instead. He then said that despite knowing exactly how fucked the Cybertronian race would be without the civil war, the fact that the rest of the galaxy would be spared the devastation of giant robots fighting all over it for 4 million years more than made up for it. He said that he'd rather save all those multitudes of lives than preserve a timeline where Cybertron did not end up under a hellish Functionalist dictatorship a thousand times worse than the original Functionalist regime had been.

Rewind was clearly distraught; Chromedome, despite the distance that had grown between the two, went to comfort him.

The rest of the party had other ideas about how the mission would play out. Whirl replaced the gutted Spark in Megatron's body with a one-percenter (high potential) Spark that Brainstorm had picked up during his journey across time and, as it turned out, preserved the integrity of the timeline with this act: they had always been meant to go back in time, interact with the timeline in the way they had and eventually lead to Megatron being a Forged Spark in a Cold Constructed body and the feared leader he would become in the future.

Everyone returned to the present moment, disaster averted. Chromedome and Rewind reconciled and Rewind moved back in with his spouse.

Soon after this, the Lost Light found the planet of the legendary Necrobot, the Grim Reaper of Cybertron; it turned out to be an ordinary Cybertronian with access to quantum technology that allowed him to be present at every Cybertronian death in the galaxy and record it. Using the Necrobot's databases, Rewind discovered that Dominus Ambus was deactivated; the news devastated him. However, Nightbeat discovered that Dominus Ambus was only presumed deactivated, but was in fact missing in action, revitalising Rewind's and Chromedome's hopes that he may still be found and that their efforts have not been in vain.

And that brings us to Rewind's canon point: around the time Cyclonus sees him and Chromedome holding hands in Swerve's bar; nothing seems amiss.

Personality:

Rewind is a nice sort. He's friendly — the only time we see him hostile in earnest (besides the time he shoots Megatron, literal Robot Stalin) is maybe when he talks to Prowl, and even then it's veiled behind plausible deniability (he tells Prowl that he has to film his pretty uncomfortable conversation with Chromedome, being an archivist). He can be a dick when he wants to, but he generally does not want to. He's cheerful, too. We rarely see him in a bad mood and when we do, it's usually related to having a fight with Chromedome or to his life's quest (finding Dominus Ambus) being shown futile, as it is when he finds out that the Necrobot has registered Dominus Ambus as deactivated.

He's excitable, especially when he gets to show off his video archives and his knowledge of languages. In The Death of Optimus Prime, he's all too eager to tell Optimus Prime about what's been found inside the empty Matrix of Leadership, interrupting the Autobot leader because he's so excited about the findings. He's always willing to share what he's found in his archives — whether it's grainy cryptid footage, right after Shock's Sparkeater'd body was found, or movies for movie night with the other members of the crew.

He's trusting. He believes the DJD will spare Chromedome if he does as they say, even when they renege on their original offer and taunt Chromedome by telling him they'll let him live if he makes himself forget Rewind. He has absolutely no reason to trust them; no sane Autobot does. Yet Rewind does trust them; he believes the best of everyone, even of a Decepticon team whose entire reason for existence is to torture renegade Decepticons to death. He believes they'll at least keep their word; it's not naivite or innocence, as he's too old for that, but a simple belief in the inherent goodness of sentient life. If he didn't believe that Cybertronians were not inherently bad, after all he's seen, why else would he keep fighting? He's seen the Cybertronian race at its worst, more than once (starting with the Functionalist Government and ending with all the horrors the war could throw at him), but he remains dedicated to the Autobot cause and to being an active part of it.

He's dedicated to being a part of the Autobot cause. He insists on fighting Decepticons despite being exempt as a non-combatant alt-mode. He goes to Temptoria to record and archive, yes, but he also goes to fight the Decepticons, to free the people they're turning into fuel. Despite the fact he's far from a weapon, he feels called on to fight nonetheless. Chromedome doesn't like it, but even the fact his spouse doesn't want to see him in danger cannot stop Rewind.

Rewind can't do much, but he'll always do his part. He's that kind of 'bot. For example, when Rung is comatose, Rewind tries very hard to organise not one, but three attempts at telling Rung about things he witnessed in hopes of helping Rung's brain make connections and come back online. It's a small thing, but it's an important thing and it shows his thoughtfulness and his desire to be useful.

In his own way, he's fantastically brave. When confronted with an unawakened, newly-built Megatron, Rewind is aware, painfully and intimately so (thanks to his archives being overwritten), of what awaits the Cybertronian race should the civil war never come to pass. But he's always aware what it would mean for the rest of the sentient population of the galaxy — no getting dragged into a 4-million-long war that will devastate the galaxy, fuck everything up and make Cybertronians voted least likely to be voted Mr Popular.

And he chooses the untold multitudes of potential non-Cybertronian lives over preserving Cybertron's future and shoots Megatron's Spark. That takes guts. It takes not just guts, it takes a morality that goes bone-deep (wire-deep, you get me). He thinks of the big picture; he thinks of all the people he will never know, people who don't share even his species type, and he decides that the good of the many outweighs the needs of the few. He sacrifices the very possibility of ever meeting Chromedome, of seeing the Functionalist Government fall, of Cybertronians ever again knowing something other than a brutal dictatorship where the citizens are treated little better than cattle, all for the sake of people who would never even know he had existed.

He believes in good. He belives in Good with a capital G. And he believes in doing the right thing, no matter how scared and unsure you are and no matter how small you are and how shaky your hands.

And yet, he was severely put off and wanted to leave when he witnessed the aftermath of a Sparkeater feeding, when helping to investigate Shock's death. He's got courage, but he's got no bravado — he will be afraid, even as he does what he thinks is the right and the brave thing to do. In fact, right after shooting Megatron, he does go to pieces somewhat and Chromedome has to comfort him. He's emotionally compromised as he explains his reasoning.

He's just a small robot and he believes the best of everyone and he wants things to work out. He wasn't built for war, figuratively or literally.

And yet, in some ways, Rewind wants to be a hero. Why would he shoot Robot Stalin when presented with the chance, even keeping in mind the reasoning he gave? Why go to battle when he's a non-combatant alt-mode? He can't be all selfless, that's ridiculous. Nobody is all selfless.

Some part of him wants to be a hero. Some part of him wants to be remembered. Some part of him wants to do great things, even though he's a small robot and a memory stick, the lowest of the low under the Functionalist Government (and he lived under it for such a significant amount of time that we have to assume it's affected his self-image at least somewhat — that kind of shit leaves a mark and Rewind is not cocky enough to let it just slide off him with no repercussions; he's far from having a complex, but we can't assume he didn't internalise at least a little of the propaganda). Hesitant, mild, always-there-watching Rewind does dream, at least a little, of being a great Cybertronian reknown for his deeds. At least one deed.

He's not Rodimus (he hasn't got the ego), but we can't ignore that given the chance to do something that even looks heroic, he will take it, in his own way. He wants to witness important, world-changing things and he'll take a great deal of risk to do it, despite being literally not built for combat. A memory stick can, at best, bludgeon someone.

(Well, he shot Megatron. But a memory stick with a gun is not exactly a scenario many people would go for when asked to picture a combat alt-mode.)

He's maybe not as up to heroics as he thinks he is (he gets uneasy around the aftermath of a Sparkeater attack), but he's more up to it than he looks.

He's resilient, emotionally and psychologically, though he doesn't look it. You don't survive as long as he has in a casteist society and then in a total, constant war without being able to come back, repeatedly, from trauma of all sorts. He's a little shaky, true, but he'll always turn out okay. Part of it is, of course, his incredibly strong bond with Chromedome, his spouse.

When he first met Chromedome at that Relinquishment clinic, he was in despair, ready to give up, but Chromedome reaching out to him gave him the strength to keep going and he has been drawing strength from their relationship ever since. It is the defining pillar of his life, along with his quest for Dominus Ambus's ultimate fate: after being rescued from the ruins of the second Lost Light, Rewind says outright that if Chromedome is dead, he might as well be too: he's not a unit, he's one half of a whole. (In fact, we can say he defines his life by other people to some extent.)

And that leads me into my next point: he's intensely, all-consumingly loyal. He carries on a million-long quest for Dominus Ambus in the face of overwhelming odds that he is dead; when the DJD claim they'll let Chromedome live if he makes himself forget Rewind, Rewind begs him to do it, wanting only to spare his spouse.

He's so dedicated to finding Dominus Ambus that he makes Chromedome promise to keep looking even if he himself dies.

He's kind of sappy and sentimental; he refers to Chromedome with a pet name ("Domey"), even in front of other people, even when it's actually kind of embarrassing (he uses the nickname in front of Whirl, who proceeds to goad Chromedome about it).

He's meticulous, wanting to record and catalogue everything that he witnesses. He never once turns off his camera.

Finally, as shown by his proficiency with languages, he's quite smart. Having all that footage in his head probably helps, though.

Abilities/Skills: Rewind is, first and foremost, a big damn robot. He's about 8 to 10 feet tall and made of metal. He's pretty damn resilient as a result — fellow Transformers have taken injuries as grievous as having most of their head blown off and survived and while that one particular instance may have been a fluke, we can assume Rewind can take some serious battering before he goes down.

He can transform into a giant (8 to 10 feel tall) memory stick. How much data the memory stick stores is never outright stated, but it's probably a lot. He's got 6 million years of video footage there and I don't think he's using a compression algorithm on his personal archives.

He has a head-mounted camera that does all the things a digital camcoder can do.

He is proficient at many languages, including Old Cybertronian.

He's a great source of information, carrying a whole damn lot of data within himself. Again: giant memory stick. Full of video from all around the galaxy.

He can use his camera as a projector, too, screening the footage he stores.

VIDEO;

[ A small robot, the kind with a faceplate instead of a nose and mouth, appears on-screen. A head-mounted camera flashes its red "recording" light. The robot taps it with his index finger, almost absent-mindedly, a tic, a force of habit. ]

Uh, hello? Is this thing on— oh, it's on. Hi!

Hi! I'm, uh. I'm Rewind. You might've met me before, I'm one of the Cybertronians around here. Big metal humanoids? We turn into cars. Well, sometimes we turn into cars. I turn into a memory stick and Riptide turns into a boat ... point is, we're hard to miss, really.

[ He stops and looks at the camera, faintly puzzled, though it's hard to tell expressions when all you've got to go on is a pair of alarmingly visor-like eyes. ]

Where was I going with this ... oh yeah! Yeah! See, I'm an archivist— hence the camera, see? [ He taps the camera again; one gets the impression he's beaming. ] I record things. Lots of things. All kinds of things. And I also store movies ... Cybertronian, human, you name it, I probably got it.

I was thinking, back on my old spaceship we used to have movie nights. They're great fun. A good way to bond. We should resurrect the tradition! It'll be fun and maybe it'd help you understand us as a species better, if I shared some of our significant footage with you.

It can't hurt at least, right?

If there's interest, I'll be hosting the first movie night in my quarters tonight. I'm afraid you'll have to bring your own snacks if you're not a Cybertronian ... I don't think organics can eat Energon. At least, I don't want to see the results of one trying.

Um. I'm not really used to public speaking, haha. I just watch and record.

That's all I've got to say? 'T-til all are one!

[ Well, it works for Rodimus, doesn't it?

Rewind gives a shy little salute that turns into a limp sort of wave and the video ends.
